A Tariff is a term used by your electricity supply company which outlines how you are charged in relation to power usage on your property. There are six main tariffs used predominantly within South East Queensland which is where our team of Sunshine Coast electricians are based. These tariffs include tariff 11 (single rate), tariff 12 (time of use), tariff 14 (demand), tariff 31 (night rate economy), tariff 33 (supply economy) and tariff 35 (smart control). Supply charges are the costs associated with each tariff per day for having an active connection to your home. Each of these tariffs have individual costs and benefits as outlined in the table below and explained in further detail.

Tariff 11 (single rate):
This is your standard use tariff and is likely to be described on your electricity bill as peak, standard or domestic. Electricity usage rates will be charged at the same cost per KW/H regardless of the time of day.
Tariff 12 (time of use):
The charge costs of this tariff are dependant on the times that you use electricity in relation to the demand on the electrical network. There are three time frames which include peak (4pm-8pm weekdays), off peak (10pm-7am) and shoulder (all other times). Tariff 12 is great to lower costs for when you utilise electricity usage in off peak times however peak times can incur a surplus cost to the consumer. Tariff 14 (demand):
This tariff has lower usage costs however in the Summer months when demand is high a demand charge is applied. The demand charge is a daily cost like a supply charge however is reflective of a customers peak time usage between the hours of 4pm to 8pm.
Tariff 31 (night rate economy):
Tariff 31 is generally used for storage hot water units. Your electricity supply company will provide power for eight hours per day with varying times dependant on low periods of demand. It may be displayed on your bill as controlled supply, controlled load or night rate.
Tariff 33 (supply economy):
This tariff is similar to tariff 31 with the key difference being that power is provided for 18 hours per day. This tariff is useful for smaller hot water systems, pool pumps, washing machines and dryers that don’t need to be used in peak demand times.
Tariff 35 (smart control):
This is only available to customers who have a smart meter and an existing tariff 14 connection. Its time of use hours are restricted however charges are lower compared to standard use tariffs.
